How your grade will be determined: Pie Chart

Virtual Portfolio - 33%

You will create a virtual portfolio for use in demonstrating your competency with management information systems software tools, including word processor, spreadsheets, databases, presentation, graphics, communicatons and web functions. Your portfolio will be linked and embedded to create a dynamic document. Part of this document will be uploaded to the World Wide Web. Your portfolio will be evaluated for completeness of assigned components, fuctionality, freedom from error, and effective design. Your full portfolio must also be turned in on computer disk. Print copies will not be acceptable. Portfolio components will be incrementally introduced during the LAB portions of the class. You may progress at your own speed. The portfolio is intended to be a cumulative project and should be undertaken immediately. Progress on your portfolio will be evaluated during the mid-term exam. Your portfolio will constitute 33% of your final grade. Your portfolio is due by the end of class April 21, 1998. No late portfolios will be acceptable.

Position Issue- 33%

You will present a position addressing an issue concerning Management Information Systems. Your postion may have a maximum length of 500 words. Your position should clearly identify and define the issue to be addressed, provide recent background information, develop a clear set of alternative approaches, and recommend your findings. Your communication will be evaluated for form, content, clearness of writing, and quality of argument. Your issue document will be uploaded into your student web space by midnight April 14, 1998. Your position will be linked-to from your name on the Student PROJECTS page of this webite.

Class Participation and Exams - 33%

Class Participation: You will be asked to post specific messages to the class list and the class forum, and are otherwise expected to actively participate in both human and cyber communication functions throughout the semester. In addition, you are welcomed and encouraged to raise issues and questions during class, to add cogent comments during lecture, and to freely assist fellow students in need.

We will have two evaluations:

The midterm evaluation will evaluate progress on your portfolio and will take the form of a collaborative, directed, online demonstration during class on March 10, 1998. The midterm is a pass/fail exam and will include peer-applied information evaluation components.

The Final Evaluation must be taken individually and relies on the honor system. If you cheat, the professor fails. The final evaluation will exercise all the computer functions and software covered during this class, and will address the MIS principles and issues discussed during lectures, and online. The final evaluation will be posted online on May 1, 1998 and is due by midnight May 5, 1998. If you are equipped and so inclined, you may take the final exam online from any location and need not attend class. If you prefer, you may attend class at the regularly scheduled final exam time to perform the evaluation. The evaluation will be submitted electronically. No late evalutions will be acceptable.
