This is the address of our class email list:

BUS353399-L@twu.edu

You may use this list freely to communicate with the students enrolled in this class.

This address is for a distributed email list, and is shared by Sections 01 and 02. When you send a message to this address, the computer will distribute a copy of your message to each student enrolled in the class.

System Design NOTE: When you "reply" to a message from the list, only the sender of the message gets your reply. To reply to the entire class, you must use the "reply all" function.

Introduction to email

Your Student Email Account:

When you enrolled at TWU, a student computer account was created for you. This account includes an email address. Your email address begins with either

u_ (if you are an undergraduate student)

g_ (if you are a graduate student)

f_ (if your are faculty), or

s_ (if you are staff)

note: that's a letter, then underscore, not dash.

Following this class designation will be your last name, or some derivitive of it, for instance:

u_smith

or g_williams, etc. Numbers may be added to the front of common names, for instance: g_2jones.

Following your name is the "at" symbol, @, and the twu computer address: @twu.edu

For instance: g_11williams@twu.edu

You may use this student email account for all your university work and it will remain active from semester to semester as long as you are enrolled. Remember, however, your student email account is on a state university computer and does not have the same freedom as a private email account.

You may access this account using any email software package. If you use email software other than the venus interface on the on-campus computers, you must tell it your account information. You may do this from the tools->optons->preferences menu. Remember, if you are using a public computer, remove this information when your session is over.

To find our what your regular student account email address is, you may look up your last name in the university's online directory.

Your class email account:

When you enrolled in BUS3533, another computer account was created for you, for use during and for this class only. This account will be automatically eliminated at the end of the semester. Included with this class computer account is a class email account.

Your class email address is BUS353399xxx@twu.edu, where xxx is your last initial, your first initial, your middle initial. If you have no middle initial, you have just two x's. Your intitial password for this class account is your social security number, no dashes. The first time your access this class account you will be asked to change your password. Change your password to whatever you want (a combination of letters and numbers is recommended)...AND DON'T FORGET WHAT YOU CHANGED IT TO!

In addition to your class email account, a distributed email list for the class was created., and you were subscribed to this list using your class email address. A distributed email list is a computer function that automatically sends every message sent to the list address to all the subscribed members of the list. This means when you send a message to BUS3533-L@twu.edu, the list address, the computer sends a copy of your message to all the class accounts, as well as to any other email address that has been subscibed to this list. This also means that when you reply to a message from the list, all the subscribed members receive your reply (see systems design note, above.) The email to and from this address is "distributed" by the computer to all the members of the list.

The address for the class list is BUS353399-L@twu.edu.

If you prefer to use your student account for the class list, you may do so by subscribing to the list while you are logged on via your student account. If you prefer to use your private email address for the class list, you may do so by subscribing to the list while you are logged on via your private email. If you want to use your class account for list activity, do nothing.

How to Subscribe the the class list:

If you want to participate in the class list activities from an account other than your class account,

From the preferred account, send the following message:

to: bus353399-L-request@twu.edu

subject: (leave blank)

in the body of your message:

subscribe bus353399-L your@emailaddress.

You will receive a confirmation message in reply. Keep this message as it contains the information you need to unsubscribe.

Managing your email accounts:

"Right," you're thinking, "just what I need, ANOTHER email address!" Don't worry...you can have your class email forwarded to your regular TWU student account, and "consolidate" them, if you want.

You can even have all your university email forwarded to your private email, if you want, but it takes a bit of configuration...here's how:

To make the configuration changes that allow you to send and receive your TWU email from your private Internet account, you must set your incoming mailserver to your twu.edu identity and your OUTGOING SMTP server to your Internet Service Provider's settings. These settings options are available to you via your software menu, under tools->options->preferences, etc.

Changing these settings will distrupt your normal incoming personal email, so you must change them back to their original settings to proceed with your private email. Because this is a pain, many students prefer to download a second email software, configure it to do their TWU email, and leave their personal email software alone. If you would like to do this, and you need help, send me the following information and I will send you instructions:

NOTE: If you "forward" all your class account email to another address, you won't be able to reply or post to the class list from that account, since access to the list is restricted to subscribed addresses.

For more "HOW-TOs" in dealing with Venus from an off-campus Internet account, see the TWU Information Technology website.
